An AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google shows above the regular blue-link results for some search queries, pulling together an answer from several sources and citing a handful of them. A brand can rank well in the normal results and still be left out of, or misquoted in, the summary above them.
Why it matters
Some buyers stop at an AI Overview once it answers their question, so a citation there can matter more than a top-three ranking underneath it. Because the summary is generated rather than ranked, the usual SEO levers like backlinks and keyword density only partly explain why one source gets cited and another doesn't; clear, direct answers and structured content play a larger role, and a page can rank well while never being the one the summary actually draws from.
How to measure it
Search a brand's target buying questions on Google and check whether an AI Overview appears, whether the brand is cited among the sources, and which competitors are cited instead. Repeating the same questions over time shows whether changes to a page, like a clearer answer placed higher up or better structured headings, actually earned a citation, or whether the real gap is elsewhere, like a page the engine never found or indexed at all.
