Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Quick answer

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is writing and structuring content so it can be lifted directly into a short answer, the kind a voice assistant, a search snippet, or an AI chat response gives instead of a list of links. It favors a direct one-sentence answer up front and headings shaped as questions.

Why it matters

An answer engine (a featured snippet, a voice assistant, or an AI chat response) usually extracts one short passage rather than sending the reader to the full page. Content written as long, qualifier-heavy paragraphs rarely survives that extraction intact, so a brand can have the right information on its site and still lose the answer to a competitor whose page states the same fact more directly and higher up. AEO is the writing discipline that makes a page's best fact extractable, and it applies to every page type: pricing, FAQ, feature and comparison pages all have one question they should answer first.

How to measure it

Check whether a page's own direct-answer sentence is the one an engine actually quotes back when asked the page's target question, across the engines a brand's buyers use. A mismatch (the engine answers correctly but from a different source, or answers incorrectly, or doesn't answer at all) points to either a visibility gap or a structure problem on the brand's own page. Repeating the check after a rewrite shows whether the fix actually changed which source gets quoted, rather than assuming it did.

Example

A support-software vendor's pricing FAQ buries its entry price in the third paragraph under a list of caveats. A voice assistant asked "how much does [vendor] cost" answers from a review site's summary instead, which rounds the price up and is a year out of date. Moving the exact price into the first sentence of the FAQ answer, with the caveats kept but moved after it, is a small AEO fix with a measurable effect on which source gets quoted next time the same question is asked. The vendor's own page had the correct number the whole time; it was simply never the sentence an engine could lift.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO a type of SEO?

It overlaps with technical SEO (structured data, clear headings) but its goal is different: being the exact sentence an answer engine extracts, not ranking a page in a list of results.

Does AEO apply to voice assistants only?

No. The same direct-answer structure helps a page get quoted correctly by search snippets and by AI chat engines, since all three extract one passage rather than reading a full page.

What is the simplest AEO fix?

Put the direct answer to the page's main question in the first sentence under the heading, before any qualifier or caveat, so an engine extracting one passage gets the complete fact.
