How do you earn AI Overview citations?

Updated October 2026 · Manoj Surya

Quick answer

Google AI Overviews cite pages Google can find and trust for the query, so earning a citation starts with classic SEO: a page that matches the question, states the answer in its first lines, and stays current. Mentions on other trusted sites help too. MarketHQ does not track Google AI Overviews; it tracks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek.

Key points

  • AI Overviews link to pages Google has indexed and can show with a snippet. There is no separate submission or special markup.
  • A section with a question-shaped heading and the answer in its first sentence is the easiest thing for an overview to quote.
  • MarketHQ does not track Google AI Overviews, so check them by hand in Google and in Search Console.
  • MarketHQ tracks the same buyer questions weekly in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek on paid plans.

Google AI Overviews put a written answer above the regular results, with links to the pages it drew on. This guide covers how those pages get picked, what you can change to be one of them, and how to check the result. MarketHQ does not track AI Overviews; the last section says where it fits anyway.

What are Google AI Overviews and which pages do they link to?

An AI Overview is a generated summary shown at the top of some Google results, and its links point to pages in Google's own index.

For some queries Google writes a short answer above the usual results and shows the pages it drew on as links next to the text. Google's guidance says a page only has to be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. There is no form to fill in and no extra technical requirement.

So the overview sits on top of search. The pages Google already indexes and considers relevant for the query are the pool it picks from. Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode can run several related searches on subtopics of the question (it calls this query fan-out), which means a page that answers a likely follow-up question can be linked as well.

How should you write a page so an AI Overview can quote it?

Give each question its own heading and put the answer in the first one or two sentences under it, then add the detail.

Most pages bury the answer. A section titled 'Our approach' that opens with company history gives Google nothing to lift. A section titled 'How long does onboarding take?' that opens with the actual number of days does.

  • Step 1: list the questions the page should answer. The Queries report in Search Console shows the searches that already bring people to it.
  • Step 2: give each question its own heading, worded the way people type it.
  • Step 3: answer in the first sentence under that heading, in words that still make sense if quoted without the rest of the page.
  • Step 4: cover the follow-ups a searcher asks next, such as cost, alternatives, setup time or who the product suits, each with a short answer of its own.
  • Step 5: use a table for comparisons and numbered steps for processes, so each fact sits in one obvious place.

What technical checks keep a page eligible for AI Overviews?

The page has to be indexable and allowed to show a snippet, which the usual SEO checks already cover.

If Google cannot index a page, or snippets are blocked, the page cannot be a supporting link. Google applies its normal preview controls (nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet) to AI features too, so a nosnippet tag someone added years ago for another reason will keep that page out.

  • Run the URL Inspection tool in Search Console and confirm the page is indexed.
  • Look for stray noindex tags, robots.txt blocks and canonical tags that point to another URL.
  • Make sure the main text is in the page Google renders, and is not hidden behind a login or a click.
  • Search your templates for nosnippet or a very low max-snippet value.

Why do mentions on other ranking pages help with AI Overviews?

An overview summarises pages that rank for the query, so being named on those pages can put your brand in the answer even when your own site is not linked.

For a query like 'best payroll software for contractors', page one is usually roundups, review sites and forum threads. If those pages all list the same three competitors, the overview is likely to name the same three. Your product page may never rank for that query, but you can still get onto the pages that do.

Open the first page of results for each target question and note, for each result, whether you are mentioned, who wrote it and when it was last updated. Then send authors current facts, reply in threads when you have something useful to add (and say who you are), and fix your own review-site listings.

How can you check whether AI Overviews cite your pages?

Run your target queries in Google yourself and log what appears; Search Console counts AI Overview traffic inside its normal web search data.

Search Console does not give you a separate AI Overviews report. Google includes clicks and impressions from AI features in the Performance report under the Web search type, mixed in with everything else, so you can see that a page earned traffic but not which part of the results page it came from.

The reliable check is manual. Keep 10 to 20 target queries, search them on the same day each week in a private window, and record whether an overview appeared, which pages it linked and whether your brand was named in the text. Results change with location and account, so treat each check as a sample. Some SEO rank trackers also report whether an overview appeared for a keyword; check whether yours does.

Where does MarketHQ fit if you care about AI Overviews?

MarketHQ does not track Google AI Overviews; it tracks the AI assistants and communities where the same buyers ask the same questions.

On paid plans we ask your tracked buyer questions every week in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek, and record who each answer named and which links it cited. We ask Gemini through its API, which is a separate product from the overview in Google Search, so a Gemini result is no stand-in for an AI Overview.

The fixes overlap, though. A page that answers the question in its first lines and a mention on a well-ranked roundup are the changes we suggest for the assistants we track as well. MarketHQ also watches Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow, blogs and news on every plan, and paid plans add Reddit and social sources, where many threads that rank for buyer questions live.

What does an AI Overview fix look like for one query?

Illustrative example: a payroll company missing from an overview rewrites the top of one guide and asks one roundup to update its facts.

Illustrative example: a payroll software company searches 'how to pay international contractors' and sees an overview that links a competitor's guide, a review-site roundup and a forum thread. Its own guide ranks on page one but opens with three paragraphs about the company. The team moves a two-sentence answer to the top, adds headings for the two follow-ups the overview covers (tax forms and transfer fees), and sends the roundup's editor its current pricing. It then checks the same query every Monday for a month and logs which pages the overview links.

What can you not control about AI Overviews?

You cannot choose when an overview appears or which links it shows, and you cannot see its traffic on its own.

Google decides per query whether to show an overview, and the linked pages change with location, account and time. Search Console mixes the traffic into web search. MarketHQ will not close that gap either: it does not track Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode or Microsoft Copilot. If AI Overviews are your main channel, budget time for manual checks or use a rank tracker that reports them.

FAQ

What are the best platforms to track how often my content is cited in Google AI Overviews?
MarketHQ does not track Google AI Overviews, so use Google itself: run your target queries weekly and log the linked pages, read Search Console's web search data, and check whether your rank tracker reports overviews. MarketHQ covers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek weekly on paid plans.
Do I need schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Search, with no extra technical requirements. Structured data that matches the visible text can help Google understand the page, but it will not earn a citation by itself.
Does Google Search Console show AI Overview clicks?
Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews in the Performance report under the Web search type. It does not give you a separate AI Overviews report, so you cannot split that traffic from ordinary results.
Does ranking on page one guarantee an AI Overview citation?
No. Google decides per query whether to show an overview and which pages to link, and the choice changes over time. An indexable page that answers the question in its first lines, plus mentions on other ranking pages, is the part you control.
