AEO
Does schema markup matter for AEO, and how do you implement it?
Updated October 2026 · Manoj Surya
Quick answer
Schema markup helps answer engines parse your pages, but no public evidence shows it gets you named in AI answers on its own. Add Organization, Product or SoftwareApplication, Article and FAQPage as JSON-LD generated from the same data the page renders, then measure the effect: MarketHQ tracks whether six AI engines name you on the same questions every week.
Key points
- Treat schema as hygiene: it tells machines what a page is, while clear text earns the mention.
- Generate JSON-LD from the same data that renders the page, so markup and visible text never disagree.
- MarketHQ does not audit your schema; it measures whether AI answers name you before and after a change.
- MarketHQ asks your tracked questions in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek weekly on paid plans.

Schema markup is structured data you add to a page so machines can read what it is: an organisation, a product, an article, a set of questions and answers. Answer engines parse pages too, so schema is a common first step in answer engine optimisation (AEO). This guide covers which types to use, how to implement them without drift, and how much weight to put on them.
Does schema markup help you show up in AI answers?
It helps engines parse a page; on its own it does not make an engine recommend you, so pair it with clear, quotable text.
A Semrush study comparing about 300,000 AI-cited URLs with Google-ranking pages found structured data correlated with being cited, though less strongly than clear summaries and question-and-answer formatting. That is correlation, and pages with good markup tend to be well-built in other ways too.
The practical reading: schema makes your facts unambiguous to a machine, such as your product name, price, author and update date. Whether an assistant names you still depends on what your page says and what other sites say about you.
Which schema types matter for answer engine optimisation?
Start with the five types that describe who you are, what you sell and what each page answers.
Use JSON-LD, the format Google recommends, in a script tag of type application/ld+json. Mark up only what is visible on the page.
| Schema type | Where to use it | What it tells machines |
|---|---|---|
| Organization | Home and About pages | Your name, logo, URL and official profiles (sameAs) |
| Product or SoftwareApplication | Product and pricing pages | What you sell, its category and its price (offers) |
| Article or BlogPosting | Guides and blog posts | Headline, author, datePublished and dateModified |
| FAQPage | Pages with real questions and answers | Each question with its answer, matching the visible text |
| BreadcrumbList | Every page below the home page | Where the page sits in your site |
How do you implement schema markup for AEO, step by step?
Generate JSON-LD from your page data, mirror the visible content exactly, validate it, and re-check after every deploy.
The common failure is drift: an FAQ answer edited on the page but not in the markup, or a price changed in one place only. Generating markup from the same source as the page removes that whole class of error.
- Step 1: list your page types (home, product, pricing, blog, comparison) and pick the schema type for each from the table above.
- Step 2: build the JSON-LD from the same data object that renders the page, not from a hand-written copy.
- Step 3: copy FAQ questions and answers word for word from the visible page.
- Step 4: set dateModified only when the content really changed; a date bumped without changes erodes trust.
- Step 5: validate with Google's Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator, then fix every error.
- Step 6: re-validate after each deploy that touches templates.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
Yes, where you have real questions, even though Google now shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites.
Most sites will not get the expandable FAQ result in Google any more. The markup is still a cheap, machine-readable copy of your questions and answers, and question-and-answer formatting is one of the traits associated with AI citation. Write the answers so each one stands alone in two or three sentences.
The speakable property, which points at the passage best suited to being read aloud, is a beta feature in Google aimed at news. Add it to a quick-answer block if you like, but do not expect a visible result.
What matters more than schema for AI answers?
A direct answer near the top of the page, question-shaped headings, honest dates and mentions of your brand on other sites.
An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlated with AI visibility far more strongly than backlinks. For most companies, being named in review roundups, comparison posts and active forum threads moves answers more than any markup change.
On your own pages, put the answer to the page's main question in the first two sentences, use headings phrased as the questions buyers ask, and keep comparison and pricing pages current.
How do you know if schema changes moved your AI visibility?
Track the same questions in the same engines before and after the change, and compare four-week trends.
MarketHQ asks your tracked questions in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek every week on paid plans, records whether you were named and which sites were cited, and keeps the history, so a markup release has a before and after. For a one-off reading, the free AEO audit checks whether ChatGPT and DeepSeek name you today.
What does a schema rollout look like in practice?
Illustrative example: markup and a content rewrite ship together, and tracking shows the combined effect.
Illustrative example: a B2B invoicing tool adds Organization markup to its home page, SoftwareApplication with its price to the pricing page, and FAQPage to a pricing FAQ it rewrote so each answer starts with the fact. It tracks ten pricing and comparison questions weekly.
Four weeks later it can see which questions moved, but not which change moved them. That is normal. Ship markup and content improvements together and judge the release by the trend on the questions you care about.
What can schema markup not do for AEO?
It cannot make an engine recommend you, add missing third-party mentions, or fix unclear copy.
Schema describes a page; it does not change what the page or the rest of the web says. MarketHQ does not validate or generate schema. It measures the outcome you care about, whether AI answers name you, and shows the Reddit threads, news and social mentions that shape those answers.
FAQ
- Does schema markup help with answer engine optimization?
- It helps engines parse your pages, and studies associate structured data with AI citation, but it does not get you named on its own. Pair it with direct answers, question-shaped headings and mentions on other sites.
- Which schema types should I use for AEO?
- Organization on your home and About pages, Product or SoftwareApplication on product and pricing pages, Article or BlogPosting on guides, FAQPage where you have real questions, and BreadcrumbList across the site. Use JSON-LD and mark up only visible content.
- Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
- Yes, where the questions are real. Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites, but the markup is cheap, machine-readable and mirrors a format associated with AI citation.
- How do I check if schema improved my AI visibility?
- MarketHQ tracks the same questions weekly in six AI engines on paid plans, so you can compare the weeks before and after a release. The free AEO audit gives a one-off reading in ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
