MarketHQ vs Awario

Updated September 2026

Awario turns up on most social-listening shortlists because it publishes its prices, which half of that category refuses to do. It is a fair tool to weigh against us, and a genuinely different one. Every Awario figure below was read off Awario's own site in September 2026.

Quick answer

MarketHQ is developer-market intelligence: Hacker News, GitHub, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Dev.to and Lobsters, plus paid social and web lanes, with AI-answer visibility and a gap analysis on paid plans. Awario is social listening: X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, sold by topics and mention volume. Pick MarketHQ if your buyers argue in threads developers read. Pick Awario for consumer-social breadth.

Key points

  • Awario Starter is $49 a month billed monthly, or $29 billed annually, as of September 2026.
  • Reddit is the only developer-adjacent community Awario names; it does not list GitHub, Hacker News or Stack Overflow.
  • MarketHQ tiers differ by tracking capacity only, so API keys, MCP access and AI-answer visibility sit on every paid plan.

Why choose MarketHQ instead of Awario?

MarketHQ covers the communities where developer buying decisions happen — GitHub, Hacker News and Stack Overflow — none of which Awario names on its site.

Awario is social listening for marketing teams: X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Reddit at volume, sold by topic and mention cap. MarketHQ focuses on the developer-native sources those teams mostly skip, and adds paid lanes for X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Quora, Bluesky and Product Hunt when you need them.

The output differs too. MarketHQ sends a grouped Slack daily digest, surfaces gap analysis with an action plan, and checks weekly whether AI assistants name you for buying questions in your category. Flat capacity pricing means API keys, MCP access and those features sit on every paid plan from Lite at $29 up.

Choose Awario if your audience lives primarily on Instagram, Facebook or consumer social. Choose MarketHQ if a developer issue, a Stack Overflow answer or a Hacker News thread is where the deal actually moves.

What sources does MarketHQ cover?

Free: Hacker News, GitHub, RSS, Stack Overflow, Dev.to, Lobsters. Paid plans add Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Quora, Web, Perplexity, Product Hunt, Broader web crawl, Bluesky.

What is Awario?

Awario is a social listening tool: you create topics, it collects mentions from social networks, blogs, forums, news and the web, and it reports sentiment, share of mentions and leads.

Its own pages list X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, Vimeo, blogs, forums, news and the web as sources, with over 13 billion web pages crawled daily. It also offers Boolean search, location-based monitoring, sentiment, a topic cloud, custom reports, lead finding, a Slack integration and a social listening API.

Plans are sold by capacity. Starter, at $49 a month billed monthly or $29 billed annually, gives 3 topics, unlimited keywords per topic, 30,000 mentions a month and 1 team member. Pro is $149 or $89 with 15 topics; Enterprise is $399 or $249 with 100 topics.

What is MarketHQ?

MarketHQ is developer-market intelligence: it watches the communities where developers argue about tools, then tells you what the mentions mean and what to do next.

The sources are Hacker News, GitHub, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Dev.to, Lobsters and RSS, with paid social and web lanes on top. On that feed sit a weekly check of how AI assistants answer buying questions in your category, gap analysis with an action plan, competitor page-change monitoring on paid plans, a Slack daily digest, an API, an MCP endpoint for agents, and chat rather than a dashboard.

Pricing is Free, Lite $29, Startup $99 and Growth $199 a month, with a seven-day trial for $0.99 on paid plans. The tiers differ by tracking capacity only, so a Lite workspace gets the same analysis, digest, API keys and MCP access as a Growth one and simply tracks less.

Which one covers developer communities?

MarketHQ, by a wide margin. Reddit is the only developer-adjacent community Awario names anywhere on its site.

GitHub, Hacker News, Stack Overflow, Dev.to and Lobsters do not appear in Awario's source list or navigation. That is not an oversight; Awario sells to marketing teams watching consumer social, and for that job Instagram matters more than Lobsters.

A developer-tool buying decision leaves its fingerprints somewhere other than social: a GitHub issue comparing SDKs, a Stack Overflow answer recommending someone else, a Show HN thread where users compare notes.

How do the two prices actually compare?

They meet at $29 a month, but only if you pay Awario a year up front; billed monthly, Awario Starter is $49 against our $29.

Awario gates capacity rather than features: Starter's 3 topics, 30,000 mentions and single seat are the constraint, and the way out is Pro at $149 monthly or $89 annually. Keywords per topic are unlimited at every tier, which is generous if your brand has many spellings.

MarketHQ gates capacity only. Every paid plan from Lite up includes API keys, MCP access, the Slack digest, competitor page-change monitoring and the weekly AI-visibility check. If you want one thing tracked properly and an agent able to read it, $29 carries all of it.

Does either one track how AI assistants answer buying questions?

MarketHQ does, weekly. Awario lists no AI-visibility or AI-answer tracking on its pricing page or product pages.

Awario's analysis is retrospective and quantitative: how many mentions, what sentiment, what share of the conversation, which posts look like leads. That is a real job, and for a consumer brand it is most of the job.

The question we answer is different: when a developer asks an assistant which tool solves their problem, does your name come back, and if not, whose does. We check that weekly and turn the answer into a gap analysis with one move per gap.

Where does Awario beat MarketHQ?

Awario wins on consumer-social volume and marketing analytics. Choose MarketHQ when a GitHub issue or Hacker News thread is where the deal moves.

If your audience is on Instagram or Facebook, Awario sees sources MarketHQ does not cover. Unlimited keywords per topic and sentiment reports fit a consumer marketing team.

MarketHQ wins for developer-tool companies: Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow and a Slack digest on free, plus gap analysis and weekly AI-answer visibility on paid plans from Lite at $29.

  • Choose Awario if your audience is on Instagram, Facebook or Vimeo, which MarketHQ does not cover.
  • Choose Awario if volume-based sentiment and share-of-mentions reporting is what your marketing team needs.
  • Choose Awario if the free Starter trial with no credit card is more convenient than our $0.99 seven-day trial.

What does a week on each tool look like?

Awario gives you a volume chart and a mention stream; MarketHQ gives a shorter list with a reason attached. The numbers below are illustrative, not measured.

Illustrative: you sell an observability agent and track your brand, two competitors and the phrase "trace sampling". On Awario Starter that is three topics, the whole allowance, and what arrives skews to X and Reddit because that is where the volume is.

On MarketHQ the same week surfaces a GitHub issue comparing your agent's overhead with a competitor's and two Stack Overflow answers recommending them, grouped in one Slack digest, plus a weekly read on whether assistants name you when someone asks about sampling.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Awario cost?

Awario publishes three plans, as of September 2026: Starter at $49 a month billed monthly or $29 billed annually, Pro at $149 or $89, and Enterprise at $399 or $249. The tiers differ by topics, monthly mentions, stored mentions per topic and team members.

Does Awario have a free plan?

No free plan is published. Awario offers a trial that grants free access to the Starter plan, with up to 3 alerts and up to 30,000 mentions, and no credit card required. Its pricing page does not state how long the trial lasts. MarketHQ has a free tier.

Does Awario monitor GitHub, Hacker News or Stack Overflow?

It does not name them. Awario lists X, Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, YouTube, Vimeo, blogs, forums, news and the web as its sources, so Reddit is the only developer-adjacent community covered. MarketHQ names Hacker News, GitHub, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Dev.to and Lobsters.

Does Awario track AI-answer visibility?

Nothing on its pricing page or product pages lists AI visibility or AI-answer tracking. MarketHQ checks weekly how AI assistants answer buying questions in your category and feeds the result into a gap analysis with an action plan attached to each gap.

Can I use either tool from a script or an agent?

Awario lists a social listening API and a Slack integration on its site. MarketHQ includes API keys and MCP access on every paid plan from Lite up, so an agent can query your tracked mentions and analysis directly. Free MarketHQ workspaces do not get keys.
