Why does original data help GEO?

Updated October 2026 · Manoj Surya

Quick answer

Original data helps GEO because AI answers, and the writers they draw on, need a source for specific claims. A benchmark, survey or dataset only you publish gives other sites a reason to cite you, and those mentions shape what assistants say about your category. Publish the method with the numbers, date it, and check whether AI answers start naming you.

Key points

  • A specific, dated number with a method attached is easier to quote than a general claim, for writers and for AI engines.
  • Most of the effect comes from other sites citing your data, so distribution matters as much as the study.
  • MarketHQ tracks the buying questions your data should influence, weekly in six AI engines, on paid plans from $29 a month.
  • MarketHQ also shows the links each answer cited, so you can see whether your study page is among them.

Most pages in a category say the same things in slightly different words. AI engines and the people who write the articles those engines read need a source for specific claims, and a number only you publish gives them one. This guide covers which kinds of original data work for a company of any size, how to publish them so they get quoted, and how to tell whether AI answers start naming you.

Why do AI answers cite original data?

Because a specific claim needs a source, and when only one page has the number, that page or the articles quoting it get cited.

When an engine searches the web before answering, it looks for pages that state the answer plainly. A sentence such as 'in our 2026 survey of 400 support teams, the median time to close a ticket was 9 hours' (a made-up example) can be lifted into an answer with a link. 'We help teams respond faster' cannot.

The larger effect is indirect. Journalists, bloggers and people writing comparison posts quote numbers they can attribute, and those articles become part of what models learn and what engines retrieve later. A study that gets cited in twenty articles puts your brand name next to your category twenty more times.

The research paper that introduced the term generative engine optimization, published in 2023 by researchers from Princeton and other universities, tested page edits against generative engine answers and found that adding statistics, quotations and citations made pages more visible in their tests.

What kinds of original data can a company publish?

Anything you can measure that others in your market cannot: aggregated product usage, a customer survey, a benchmark you run, or an analysis of public data.

You do not need a research team. Pick a question your buyers ask that has no good public answer, and look for data you already hold or can collect in a few weeks.

Types of original data and what each needs
TypeExampleWhat it takes
Aggregated usage dataA scheduling app reports the most-booked meeting lengths across its usersAnonymised data you already store and a clear privacy line
Customer or market surveyA payroll company surveys 300 small business owners on late paymentsA short survey, a fair sample and the full question list published
BenchmarkA hosting company times cold starts across five providersA repeatable test with the scripts and settings published
Analysis of public dataA recruiting tool counts remote job postings by city from public listingsA clear source, a date range and the counting rules
Price or market indexA freight broker publishes a monthly lane-rate indexConsistent data every period so the index can be compared

How should you format a data study so AI engines can quote it?

Put each finding in one plain sentence near the top, show the numbers in an HTML table, and publish the method and date on the same page.

Write the page for someone who will copy one sentence. Each key finding should stand alone: the number, what it measures, the sample and the year.

  • Open with three to five findings, each one sentence with the number in it.
  • Use an HTML table for the data itself; numbers buried in an image cannot be quoted.
  • Add a method section: who or what was measured, how many, when, and what was excluded.
  • Date the study in the title or first line, for example 'State of restaurant payroll, 2026'.
  • Keep the page at a stable URL and update it each year instead of publishing a new one.
  • Offer the raw data as a CSV if you can; it makes the study easier to cite and check.

How do you get other sites to cite your data?

Send the single most surprising finding to the people who already write about your category, and post it where your buyers discuss the topic.

Make a list of twenty writers, newsletters and podcasts that covered your topic in the last year, and send each a two-line note with one finding and the link. Share a short summary in the communities where the question comes up, such as a relevant subreddit or Hacker News for technical audiences, and answer questions about the method in the thread.

Then watch for the pickup. MarketHQ shows mentions of your brand in blogs and news feeds, Hacker News, GitHub, Stack Overflow, Dev.to and Lobsters on every plan, with Reddit, X, LinkedIn, YouTube and Bluesky on paid plans, so you can see who quoted the study and reply where it is being discussed.

How do you tell whether original data improved your AI visibility?

Track the buying questions the study should influence before you publish, then compare the same questions weekly for the following months.

Choose five to ten questions the data speaks to, such as 'how long does payroll take for a small business' or 'best payroll software for restaurants', and record who AI answers name today. After publishing, look for two changes: whether your study page appears among the cited links, and whether your brand starts appearing in answers to the category questions.

MarketHQ asks your tracked questions every week in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek on paid plans, and lists the links each answer cited per question and engine. Expect a slow curve: cited links can change within weeks, while answers that come from what a model already learned move more slowly.

What does an original data study look like in practice?

Illustrative example: a payroll company turns a 300-person survey into one page, ten outreach emails and a tracked question list.

Illustrative example: a payroll company for restaurants surveys 300 owners about how long payroll takes each week. It publishes 'Restaurant payroll in 2026' with four one-sentence findings at the top, a table by restaurant size, and the full question list and sample description at the bottom.

Before publishing, it adds eight questions to its tracked list, including 'how long does restaurant payroll take'. It emails ten hospitality writers with the headline finding and posts a summary in a restaurant owners' forum. Over the next two months it watches whether the study page shows up among the cited links and whether its name appears in answers to the category questions.

When does original data not help?

When the sample is too small to trust, the method is hidden, or nobody outside your company ever sees it.

A survey of 30 friendly customers will not be quoted by careful writers, and engines tend to repeat what careful writers say. A study with no distribution can sit unread for a year. Original data is also slower than fixing a missing comparison page; if AI answers leave you out because your own site never says what you do, fix that first.

FAQ

Does original research help with AI search visibility?
It helps when other sites cite it. A dated, specific finding with its method gives writers and AI engines a reason to quote your page, and each citation puts your brand next to your category. Track the related buying questions before and after you publish to see whether it worked.
How big does a survey need to be?
Big enough that the finding holds up when someone asks how it was measured. Publish the sample size and how respondents were found, and avoid splitting a small sample into many subgroups.
Should original data go in a blog post or a dedicated page?
A dedicated page at a stable URL that you update each year. It collects links over time, and AI engines see one current source instead of several dated posts.
How do I see if AI answers cite my study?
MarketHQ lists the links each AI answer cited for your tracked questions, per engine, every week on paid plans. Check whether your study page appears and whether your brand is named in the answers to the questions the data covers.
