Deep Search

Quick answer

Deep search is a slower mode some AI products offer, such as Perplexity, where the engine runs many searches, reads many pages, and compiles a longer answer with citations instead of a quick single-pass response. It takes more time to return an answer but reads further into a topic, including older or lower-traffic pages a quick answer would skip.

Why it matters

A deep search answer draws on a wider slice of the web than a quick answer does, so pages a brand considers minor, an old forum thread, a documentation page nobody updated, a niche review, can end up shaping what the engine says. A brand that only manages its homepage and top landing pages is managing the part of its footprint a quick answer reads, while leaving the part a deep search mode reads unattended. The two modes can produce noticeably different answers to the identical question for exactly this reason.

How to measure it

Ask the same buying question in a product's deep search mode and its regular quick-answer mode, then compare the two source lists rather than just the two answers. A deep search answer that cites pages a brand didn't expect to be read, old documentation, a long-closed support thread, points at content that needs updating or removing, since it is now part of what shapes the engine's longer answer even though it rarely shows up in a brand's own analytics.

Example

A developer-tools company's public documentation wiki still carries a page describing a feature the product deprecated a while back. In quick-answer mode an AI engine skips that page entirely, but in deep search mode it reads the wiki in full and folds the deprecated detail into its summary alongside current information, muddying the answer. Updating or removing the old page fixes what the deep search mode surfaces without requiring any change to the pages the quick-answer mode was already reading correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Is deep search the same as regular AI search?

No. Regular AI search usually answers from a handful of sources quickly. Deep search runs many more searches and reads further into a topic before answering, which takes longer but surfaces more of a brand's footprint.

Which AI products offer a deep search mode?

Perplexity is the most visible example, offering a mode that runs extended research before answering. Other AI products are adding similar slower, more thorough modes alongside their default quick-answer mode.

Does deep search cite more sources than a quick answer?

Usually yes. A deep search answer typically lists more sources, including pages further down a brand's site or older content a quick answer would skip entirely.

Should a brand manage its older pages differently because of deep search?

Yes. A page too minor to matter for a quick answer can still get read and quoted in a deep search mode, so outdated detail on an old page is worth cleaning up rather than ignoring.
