Is there a way to see which prompts mention your brand in AI tools?

Marketers ask this because Google Search Console shows the queries that surface a page. AI assistants have no equivalent. This post explains what you can and cannot see, and how to build the closest practical substitute: a tracked question list with a per-question, per-engine answer log.

Quick answer

MarketHQ shows which of your tracked questions mention your brand, engine by engine, with the full answer text. No tool can show the real prompts other people type into ChatGPT or Claude, because the AI companies do not publish them. What you can see is how each engine answers the questions you choose to track.

Key points

  • OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and the other AI companies do not share user prompts with brands.
  • The practical substitute is a fixed list of buyer questions you ask every week.
  • MarketHQ shows, per question and per engine, whether you were named and who was named instead.
  • MarketHQ keeps the full answer text so you can read how you were described.

Can you see the actual prompts people type about your brand?

No. AI assistants do not publish user prompts, and no tracking tool can access them.

Conversations in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and similar assistants are private to the user. There is no search console for AI answers that lists the prompts where your brand appeared. Be wary of any tool that implies otherwise. What these tools actually do is ask their own set of prompts and report the answers.

Keyword data from SEO tools can help you choose what to track, but it describes what people type into a search box, not a log of what they ask an assistant.

What can you see instead?

You can see how each AI engine answers the questions you choose, and whether those answers name you.

If you pick questions that mirror what buyers really ask, the answers are a good proxy for what those buyers see. The quality of the whole exercise depends on the question list, so spend more time on it than on the tool.

  • Questions sales hears on calls, written the way prospects say them.
  • Questions from Reddit, Hacker News and Stack Overflow threads in your category.
  • Category questions that don't name any brand, such as 'best tool for X'.
  • 'Alternative to X' questions for your two or three main competitors.
  • Problem questions where your product is one possible answer.

How does MarketHQ show which questions mention you?

Every tracked question gets a row per engine showing the answer, whether it named you, and which competitors it named.

On paid plans MarketHQ asks each tracked question in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek every week, and shows those answers on the AI Visibility page. Perplexity is asked the same questions and its answers appear on the Web Search tab. Each row is tagged 'Recommends you' or 'Not mentioned', lists the other brands the answer named, and opens the full answer text.

The headline counts how many of this week's sampled answers named you, and a 'Who AI recommends in your space' list ranks the brands that appeared most often, with the competitors you track marked. You can sort answers by whether they named you, which groups the misses together; questions where you are never named are usually the most useful ones to work on.

How do you choose which questions to track?

Start with a small list that matches real buying moments, then add and remove questions as you learn.

When you sign up, MarketHQ suggests starter questions for your category. You can edit them and add your own in settings, up to your plan's limit: 10 questions on Lite, 60 on Startup and 120 on Growth. Keep the wording stable once a question is in the list, because changing it resets the comparison.

Drop questions that never name anyone in your category. They usually mean the question is too broad, and they add noise to your share.

What does a per-question view reveal?

Illustrative example: a database company is named for one use case and missing from another.

Illustrative example: a hosted Postgres company tracks 12 questions. It is named in most answers to 'best serverless Postgres' but in almost none for 'Postgres for analytics workloads', where two competitors appear every time. The overall share looks fine; the per-question view shows a specific use case the engines do not associate with the product, and that becomes the next page to write.

What are the limits of a tracked question list?

It shows answers to your questions, not the full range of what users ask.

Real prompts are longer and more personal than any list, and answers vary between runs, accounts and locations. Treat per-question results as a trend across weeks. MarketHQ does not track Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode or Microsoft Copilot.

FAQ

Is there a way to see which prompts mention my brand in AI tools?
MarketHQ shows which of your tracked questions mention you in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek each week. No tool can see the real prompts users type; AI companies do not publish them.
Which tools can show me insights on how my brand performs in ChatGPT?
MarketHQ shows each ChatGPT answer to your tracked questions, whether it named you, and who it named instead, alongside five other engines. For a one-off reading, MarketHQ's free LLM mention checker covers ChatGPT and DeepSeek.
Can I add my own questions to track?
Yes. MarketHQ suggests starter questions at signup, and you can edit them or add your own up to your plan's limit: 10 on Lite, 60 on Startup, 120 on Growth.
Why does my brand appear for some prompts and not others?
Engines associate brands with specific use cases. If your pages and community mentions only cover one use case, answers to other questions go to competitors. MarketHQ's per-question view shows exactly where that happens.
