What is the difference between a mention and a citation?
Updated October 2026 · Manoj Surya
Quick answer
A mention is your brand named in an AI answer's text; a citation is a link the answer shows as its source. You can be mentioned without being cited, and cited in an answer that recommends a competitor, so track both. MarketHQ records whether each answer named you and which sites it cited, across six AI engines weekly on paid plans.
Key points
- A mention is what the buyer reads; a citation is where the engine got its information.
- Many answers cite nothing at all, so citation tracking alone misses part of the picture.
- Being cited while a competitor is recommended is a common and fixable problem.
- MarketHQ records, per answer and per engine, whether you were named, who else was named and which links were cited.
- MarketHQ marks answers with no links as 'Answered from memory, no sources' so they are not miscounted.

AI visibility reports use 'mention' and 'citation' as if they were the same thing. They are not, and mixing them up leads to the wrong fixes. This guide defines both, walks through the four combinations you will see in real answers, and shows what to do about each.
What is a brand mention in an AI answer?
It is your brand's name appearing in the text of the answer, with or without a link.
If someone asks 'what are the best tools for managing restaurant reservations' and the answer lists your product, that is a mention. It is what the buyer actually reads and remembers. The position matters as well: first in a list of five reads differently from a footnote at the end.
Mentions also carry a description. 'X is a good budget option' and 'X is enterprise-only' are both mentions, and only one of them helps a small business choose you. Record the wording as well as the yes or no.
What is a citation in an AI answer?
It is a link the answer shows as a source for what it said.
Engines that search the web, like Perplexity, show numbered sources under or beside the answer. Others show links only when they run a search, and many answers come straight from the model's memory with no links at all. A citation tells you which page the engine leaned on, which makes it the main clue for explaining why an answer came out the way it did.
Which matters more for AI visibility, mentions or citations?
Mentions matter more for buyers, and citations matter more for diagnosis, so track mentions as the outcome and citations as the cause.
A buyer reads the names in an AI answer; opening the sources is optional. If you are cited and not named, the buyer sees your competitor. If you are named and not cited, the buyer still sees you. So the headline number on any scoreboard should be how often you are named.
Citations earn their place when you are trying to change that number. They show which pages shape the answer for each question, and those are the pages to get onto, correct or outrank.
What do the four combinations of mention and citation mean?
Each combination points to a different situation and a different fix.
Log both fields for every answer and the pattern across your questions tells you what to work on.
| Combination | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Named and cited | Your page is shaping the answer in your favour | Keep that page accurate and current |
| Named, not cited | The engine knows you from training data or other pages | Fine for now; check the description is accurate |
| Cited, not named | Your page was used, yet the answer recommends someone else | Rewrite the page so it states plainly who you serve and what you do |
| Neither | The pages the engine reads do not include you | Get onto the pages it cites, or publish a page that answers the question |
How do you track mentions and citations across your key topics?
Run a fixed list of buyer questions per topic in each engine weekly, and log both who was named and which links were shown.
Group your questions by topic, such as one product line or use case per group, so you can see where you are strong and where you are absent. For each answer, record: named yes or no, other brands named, the links shown, and the full text.
MarketHQ does this on paid plans. It asks your tracked questions in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek every week. Each answer shows whether you were named, which brands were named instead, and a Cites column listing the links it used; the detail view lists each link. Answers that cite nothing are marked 'Answered from memory, no sources'. MarketHQ lists citations per answer and per engine; it does not give you a single ranked report of the domains cited across all answers, so finding a page that keeps coming up means scanning the Cites column across your questions.
What does 'cited but not named' look like?
Illustrative example: an accounting firm's own guide is cited in an answer that recommends two competitors.
Illustrative example: an accounting firm tracks 'how should a startup handle R&D tax credits'. Perplexity cites the firm's own guide as a source, but the answer recommends two other firms by name. Reading the guide shows why: it explains the rules well and never says the firm offers the service, or who it is for. The team adds a short section near the top that names the service, the type of client and the price range, and watches the same question over the next weeks.
What can mention and citation tracking not show?
Whether a cited page actually supports the claim, and what real users saw in their own sessions.
Links in AI answers are sometimes broken or point to pages that do not back up the statement. MarketHQ reads the links that appear in each answer; it does not check whether each page supports what was said. Answers also vary by account and settings, so treat both numbers as a weekly sample.
FAQ
- Can I be cited by an AI answer without being mentioned?
- Yes. The engine can use your page as a source and still recommend a competitor, often because your page explains the topic without saying clearly what you sell or who it is for.
- Which platforms show the external sites influencing AI answers?
- MarketHQ lists the links each AI answer cited, per question and per engine, across six engines weekly on paid plans, and marks answers that cite nothing. It does not rank cited domains across all answers in one report.
- Should I track mentions or citations?
- Both. Track mentions as your main number, since buyers read names, and use citations to explain why you were or were not named. MarketHQ records both for every tracked answer on paid plans.
- Is there a free way to check if AI mentions my brand?
- Yes. MarketHQ's free GEO audit gives a one-off reading in ChatGPT and DeepSeek with no card. Weekly tracking of your own questions across six engines starts on the $29 Lite plan.
