Best AEO tools for answer engines

Updated October 2026

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the writing and structuring discipline that gets a direct, quotable answer lifted into a voice response, a search snippet or an AI chat reply, instead of sending the reader to a list of links. Most tools that brand themselves AEO platforms do two things at once: track whether an AI engine is already citing a brand, and suggest or draft the fix once it finds a gap. This list covers the ones that say AEO on their own homepage, plus MarketHQ, which tracks the same answers without the content-generation half.

Quick answer

MarketHQ tracks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and DeepSeek name a brand correctly every week, then hands a marketer a gap analysis instead of a rewritten page. Goodie, seoClarity's ArcAI and Conductor's AI Visibility module are enterprise AEO platforms that also draft or prioritize the fix. Knowatoa, Promptwatch, Gauge and SE Ranking's SE Visible sit a tier down in price and scope, mixing tracking with lighter content tooling.

Key points

  • MarketHQ checks the same six AI engines weekly and ties a missing answer to the evidence behind it, not a rewritten page.
  • MarketHQ is not an AEO content tool: no article drafting, no schema generation, no automated publishing.
  • Dedicated AEO platforms range from $59 a month at Knowatoa Starter to demo-gated enterprise contracts at seoClarity and Conductor.

What sources does MarketHQ cover?

Free: Hacker News, GitHub, RSS, Stack Overflow, Dev.to, Lobsters. Paid plans add Reddit, LinkedIn, YouTube, X, Perplexity, Product Hunt, Broader web crawl, Bluesky.

  • Drafted replies from your own strengths
  • Gap analysis and action plans
  • Weekly AI-answer visibility (paid plans)

  • API and MCP on every paid plan
  • Flat capacity pricing, tiers differ by tracking volume only

Method: every vendor fact here was read on the vendor's own site on October 8, 2026 and is listed only if the vendor states what it tracks and whether it generates content. Prices are quoted only where a figure renders on the page; a demo-gated tier is stated as such. Ordering follows how much of the AEO workflow each tool covers, from tracking only to tracking plus drafting, not popularity. Nothing here is paid placement, and MarketHQ is our own product.

What is AEO, and how is it different from GEO?

AEO is the writing discipline that gets a page's one key fact lifted as a direct answer; GEO is the broader practice of getting cited at all. The tools in this list blur the line, since most sell both.

In theory, GEO is measurement (does an engine cite this brand) and AEO is the fix (write the page so the engine can lift the fact cleanly). In practice, every vendor here that calls itself an AEO platform also tracks citations, because you cannot know what to fix without first measuring the miss, and the distinction between the two terms rarely survives contact with an actual product page.

MarketHQ only does the measurement half, and routes the fix through a gap analysis and action plan rather than a content agent. Goodie, Knowatoa, Promptwatch and Gauge all ship some form of drafting or publishing on top of their tracking, which is the actual line between an AEO platform and a plain AI-visibility tracker.

Which of these actually draft content, not just track it?

Four do: Goodie, Knowatoa, Promptwatch and Gauge.

Goodie's Content Studio generates AI-optimized, on-brand copy directly from its visibility data. Knowatoa's two named AI agents research a gap and draft the page to close it. Promptwatch's Content Agent creates content from real citation data, and Gauge publishes AI-optimized articles straight into a connected CMS such as Webflow or Sanity.

seoClarity and Conductor sit a level up: they optimize content as part of a wider enterprise SEO programme rather than a self-serve drafting tool, and SE Ranking's SE Visible is tracking only, inside a broader SEO suite that handles content elsewhere in the product.

What does an AEO platform cost?

From $59 a month at Knowatoa to demo-gated enterprise pricing at seoClarity and Conductor.

Knowatoa Starter is $59 a month for ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode tracking; its Growth plan at $199 adds Claude, Gemini, Meta AI and Perplexity plus API and MCP reporting and a dedicated account rep. Promptwatch Essential is $95 a month for 500 agent credits, rising to $579 a month for Business.

Gauge Growth is $599 a month for 600 daily prompts across six platforms and 18 articles a month. Goodie's published entry figure is $399 a month for its Core plan. seoClarity's ArcAI and Conductor's AI Visibility module are both demo-gated enterprise products, with no self-serve monthly price shown on either public pricing page.

Does AEO tooling replace an AI-visibility tracker?

No, it is the same measurement with a content or publishing layer attached, usually at a higher price.

Every AEO tool on this list is also, underneath, a prompt-tracking product. The AEO branding and the extra price buy the drafting, publishing or agent layer on top, not a different measurement. A team that only wants the number can usually get it cheaper from a plain AI-visibility tracker, including MarketHQ's own weekly check.

The harder question is whether a content team can act on a gap fast enough to make the extra drafting feature worth paying for. If content production is already the bottleneck, the drafting layer earns its price. If distribution, editing or publishing approval is the bottleneck instead, it mostly adds another draft waiting behind the ones a human already has to review and ship.

Is MarketHQ an AEO tool?

Only the measurement half. It checks six AI engines weekly but has no content-drafting agent.

MarketHQ tracks the same kind of question an AEO platform would ask an AI engine, then turns a miss into a gap analysis and action plan built from the mentions and sources already in its feed. That plan tells a marketer what to fix and where the evidence came from; it does not write the page for them.

For a team that wants drafted copy in the same subscription as the tracking, Goodie, Knowatoa, Promptwatch or Gauge are the closer fit. For a team that wants the gap and the evidence without adding a content tool to the stack, or that already has a content team that would rather write from a brief than edit a draft, MarketHQ is.

  • Want tracking plus drafting: Goodie, Knowatoa, Promptwatch or Gauge.
  • Want tracking plus gap analysis and evidence: MarketHQ.
  • Already inside seoClarity, Conductor or SE Ranking: try the built-in module first.

What would a content-led AEO push actually look like?

Track first, draft second, on a short list of named buying questions. The scenario below is illustrative, not measured.

Illustrative: a mid-sized B2B company tracks 40 buying-question prompts and finds that Perplexity recommends two named competitors and never mentions the company itself. Knowatoa's Growth plan at $199 a month researches the gap and drafts a page addressing it directly.

Before publishing that draft, MarketHQ's gap analysis would show whether the miss traces back to a documentation hole, a thin comparison page, or simply no community discussion worth citing, which changes what the drafted page actually needs to say rather than just that a page is needed at all.

Skipping that step is the most common way an AEO budget gets wasted: a team ships a well-written page that answers the wrong version of the question, because nobody checked which gap the AI engine was actually responding to before the page went into production, and the next monthly check shows the same miss with a different page attached to it.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from GEO?

They overlap heavily in practice. GEO is the broader measurement of AI-answer citations; AEO specifically means writing content so it can be lifted as a direct answer. Most vendors branding themselves AEO platforms also do GEO-style tracking underneath.

What is the cheapest AEO tool?

MarketHQ Lite at $29 a month tracks the same kind of answer across six AI engines, without a content-drafting layer. Among dedicated AEO platforms, Knowatoa Starter at $59 a month is the lowest published price.

Which AEO tools draft content automatically?

Goodie, Knowatoa, Promptwatch and Gauge all generate or draft content from their own tracking data. seoClarity, Conductor and SE Ranking fold AEO tracking into a wider suite that handles content elsewhere.

Do AEO tools track the same AI engines as GEO tools?

Mostly yes. Knowatoa covers seven engines, Gauge six, Promptwatch four. The overlap is real because AEO platforms are AI-visibility trackers with a content layer attached, not a separate measurement.

Can an existing SEO subscription cover AEO?

Partly. SE Ranking's SE Visible and seoClarity's ArcAI both add AEO tracking inside a suite built for classic SEO. Neither replaces a dedicated AEO platform's drafting or agent features.

Does MarketHQ do AEO content drafting?

No. MarketHQ tracks the same AI engines and surfaces the same kind of gap, then writes an action plan naming what to fix and why, but it does not generate or publish the replacement page itself. A content team still writes and ships the actual fix.
