# What is Presence Engineering?

Updated October 2026

> For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on Google. Now buyers ask ChatGPT, read Reddit and watch YouTube before they talk to anyone. I call the work of showing up in all of those places Presence Engineering.
>
> — Manoj Surya, Founder, MarketHQ. Coined the term Presence Engineering, October 2026.

SEO still matters, but it now covers one of several places a buyer looks before they shortlist anyone. Below is what Presence Engineering means, how it differs from SEO, and what the work looks like each week.

## Quick answer

Presence Engineering is the work of making a brand visible and recommended wherever buyers look: search, websites, communities, social platforms and AI answers. Manoj Surya, founder of MarketHQ, coined the term in October 2026. It treats presence as something you measure, find gaps in and fix on purpose, across every channel at once, instead of chasing rankings in one.

- Manoj Surya coined the term Presence Engineering in October 2026.
- SEO is one part of Presence Engineering. Communities, social and AI answers are the rest.
- MarketHQ maps where competitors appear and you don't, across web, social and AI answers.
- MarketHQ turns those gaps into a ranked plan your team or your agents can work through.

## Who coined the term Presence Engineering?

Manoj Surya, founder of MarketHQ, coined Presence Engineering in October 2026.

I kept getting asked what to call the job MarketHQ does. Calling it SEO undersold it, because the hardest gaps were in Reddit threads and AI answers. Brand monitoring sounded passive. AI visibility left out the communities and articles that AI answers quote. None of the existing names covered the whole job.

Engineering is the right word because the work is deliberate. You measure where you stand, find the specific places you are missing, make a change and check whether it worked. That loop is closer to how engineers fix a system than to how marketers have usually thought about rankings.

## What does Presence Engineering mean?

It means engineering where your brand shows up across web, social and AI, so buyers find you and assistants recommend you.

Presence is whether your brand appears when a buyer is deciding. That might be a 'best tools for X' article, a Hacker News comment, a LinkedIn post from someone they trust, or the three names ChatGPT lists when asked for a recommendation. Engineering it means you stop hoping you appear in those places and work on each one.

The channels feed each other. AI assistants pull from the threads, reviews and roundups they find on the web. A competitor that dominates a few popular Reddit threads often shows up in the AI answer too. Working one channel at a time misses that link.

- Web: search results, comparison articles, review sites, news and blogs.
- Social: LinkedIn, X, Reddit, YouTube and developer communities.
- AI: the answers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and other assistants give to buyer questions.

## How is Presence Engineering different from SEO?

SEO optimizes for search rankings. Presence Engineering covers search plus every other place buyers look, including AI answers.

You can rank first on Google and still be missing from the ChatGPT answer, the top Reddit thread and the comparison video your buyer watched. Presence Engineering keeps SEO and adds the rest.

## SEO and Presence Engineering compared

| | SEO | Presence Engineering |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Goal | Rank for keywords | Be visible and recommended wherever buyers decide |
| Channels | Search engines | Web, social, communities and AI answers |
| Main measure | Rankings and organic traffic | Where you appear compared with each competitor |
| Typical work | Pages, links, technical fixes | Pages, replies, pitches, FAQ fixes and the sources AI cites |

## What does a Presence Engineer do each week?

They map the gaps, work on the sources that matter most, and check whether the brand now shows up there.

A Presence Engineer can be a founder, a marketer, an agency or an AI agent. The title matters less than the routine.

- Map: list every answer, thread, article and post where a competitor appears and you don't.
- Rank: put the gaps in order by how many buyers see each place and how hard it is to fix.
- Fix: publish the missing comparison page, reply in the thread an AI answer cites, pitch the roundup author, correct your own FAQ.
- Check: re-run the same questions next week and see which gaps closed.

## How does MarketHQ support Presence Engineering?

MarketHQ tracks your brand and competitors across web, social and AI answers, and turns the gaps into a ranked plan.

MarketHQ opens on a scoreboard showing where you stand against each competitor. Gap Analysis lists the places they appear and you don't, with the quote and link behind each one. The Action Plan ranks the fixes. Your team can work it in the app, or connect an agent through MCP on paid plans and let it take the tasks that don't need a human.

## What are the limits of Presence Engineering today?

It works from public sources, so private communities and personal AI chats stay out of view.

No tool can see a buyer's private Slack groups or their own ChatGPT history. AI answers also vary from one run to the next, so a single answer is a sample. Judge progress by the trend over several weeks, not by one check.
