# Share of Voice (SOV)

## Quick answer

Share of voice is the percentage of all mentions in a given set, such as a set of communities, news and blog coverage, or AI-engine answers, that belong to one brand rather than its named competitors. It is a relative measure: a raw mention count means little alone, but the same count next to competitors' counts shows real movement.

## Why it matters

Mention counts rise and fall with the news cycle and with how active a market is that month, so a brand watching its own count alone can mistake a quiet month for losing ground, or a busy market for winning it. Comparing a brand's count against named competitors across the same period and the same sources removes that noise and shows real movement, and it is the only version of the number that answers the question a founder actually asks: are we winning or losing against the competitors we name, not against our own last month.

## How to measure it

Pick a fixed set of competitors and a fixed set of sources, such as specific communities, specific news and blog outlets, or a specific list of AI engines, count mentions for every brand in that set over the same window, and divide one brand's count by the set's total. Recomputing it on a rolling window, weekly or monthly, turns a single number into a trend, and keeping the competitor set and source list fixed across periods is what makes the trend comparable rather than an artifact of a changed definition.

## Example

Across four competitors' combined Hacker News, Reddit and GitHub mentions in a month, a brand holds 180 of 900 total mentions, a 20% share of voice. The next month its own mention count rises to 210, which looks like growth in isolation, but the competitor set's total rises to 1,400 because a competitor launched a popular feature, so its share of voice actually falls to 15% even as its raw count went up. Reporting only the raw 210 would have missed that the brand lost ground in the exact month it thought it gained some.

## FAQ

### Is share of voice the same as a mention count?

No. A mention count is one brand's raw total; share of voice divides that total by the combined total of a defined competitor set, so it stays meaningful even when overall market activity changes.

### Does share of voice apply to AI-engine answers?

Yes. The same ratio works for how often a brand is named in AI-engine answers to buying questions versus how often named competitors are, alongside the classic community and news version.

### How often should share of voice be recalculated?

Weekly or monthly is typical; too short a window makes the ratio noisy, and too long a window hides a real shift until it is well underway.
